Ask a Roommate for Quiet Time in Brazilian Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Explain the time and reason
A specific request is easier to act on than a general complaint. Say when you have a call, need to sleep, or are studying, then ask whether your roommate can lower the volume for that period. Use barulho for noise and volume for volume.
A request with você pode…? is direct and polite. Add por favor if it fits your tone, and make the time window clear.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tenho uma reunião às nove. Você pode baixar o volume até lá? | I have a meeting at nine. Can you turn the volume down until then? |
| Você pode fazer menos barulho por meia hora? | Could you keep the noise down for half an hour? |
Compare schedules and agree on expectations
Roommates may have different work, study, and sleep routines. Share your regular schedule and ask about theirs before suggesting quiet hours for everyone. A household agreement can be more useful than repeating the same request each day.
Use durante a semana (during the week), no fim de semana (on the weekend), and depois das… (after…) to describe a routine without implying that one schedule suits every resident.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Eu acordo cedo durante a semana. Que horário costuma funcionar para você? | I get up early during the week. What time usually works for you? |
| Podemos combinar um horário mais tranquilo depois das dez? | Could we agree on a quieter time after ten? |
Address a repeated issue calmly
If the problem keeps happening, refer to the time and agreement rather than labeling the roommate. Explain the effect and ask whether you can adjust the plan together. A clear conversation can help distinguish a one-time exception from a recurring pattern.
For a serious dispute or a building rule, check the agreement and the appropriate official channel. Everyday phrases do not determine anyone's legal rights or responsibilities.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Nos últimos dias, o som ficou alto depois do horário que combinamos. | Over the last few days, the sound has been loud after the time we agreed on. |
| Podemos rever o combinado para funcionar melhor para todo mundo? | Could we revisit our agreement so it works better for everyone? |
Remember: Give a time-specific request, compare schedules, and revisit a shared agreement if the problem repeats.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Give a time-specific request, compare schedules, and revisit a shared agreement if the problem repeats.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
