Portuguese at a Brazilian Gym: Ask About Plans, Classes, and Equipment — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask what a membership includes
Academia is the usual word for a gym in Brazil. Ask about matrícula (enrollment fee), mensalidade (monthly fee), and what is included before choosing a plan.
A short trial visit or tour may have its own terms. Ask the staff directly about access, cancellation, and class reservations rather than assuming each plan works the same way.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quais planos vocês têm? | What membership plans do you offer? |
| A mensalidade inclui as aulas em grupo? | Does the monthly fee include group classes? |
| Preciso pagar matrícula? | Do I need to pay an enrollment fee? |
Find a class, locker, or piece of equipment
Use onde fica…? to ask where something is, and tem aula de…? to ask whether a class is available. If you need someone to show you how to use a machine, ask for an explanation before starting.
In a busy gym, check whether equipment is being used before taking it. Pode revezar? asks whether you can alternate sets with the other person.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde ficam os armários? | Where are the lockers? |
| Tem aula de alongamento hoje à noite? | Is there a stretching class tonight? |
| Você ainda está usando este aparelho? Podemos revezar? | Are you still using this machine? Can we alternate? |
Remember: Ask about the membership terms, class schedule, and equipment before you begin. Academia means gym in Brazilian Portuguese.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask about the membership terms, class schedule, and equipment before you begin. Academia means gym in Brazilian Portuguese.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
