At a Pilates Studio in Brazil: Ask About Equipment and Classes — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Find out what type of class it is
Aula de Pilates is a Pilates class. Ask whether the session uses mat work, equipment, or a combination, and whether the class is group or individual. Studios may use different formats and names.
If you have never taken a class, say so and ask how the instructor introduces the movements. A studio can describe its program and help you choose a suitable session.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A aula é de solo ou usa aparelhos? | Is the class mat-based or does it use equipment? |
| A turma é em grupo ou individual? | Is the session a group or individual class? |
Confirm the schedule and what to bring
Horário means time or schedule, and roupa confortável means comfortable clothing. Ask what items are required and whether the studio provides any equipment used during class.
Confirm the date and start time, especially if the studio offers multiple class formats. If you need to reschedule, ask what options are available and check the studio’s current policy.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Que roupa devo usar para a aula? | What should I wear to class? |
| Vocês fornecem o material da aula? | Does the studio provide the class equipment? |
Clarify a movement with the instructor
If an instruction is unfamiliar, ask for a slower explanation or demonstration. Name the part you missed, such as the starting position or the sequence, so the instructor can help you follow the exercise.
Tell the instructor if you need an adjustment and follow their professional guidance. These phrases support communication; they do not determine whether an exercise is appropriate for you.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Pode explicar a posição inicial mais uma vez? | Could you explain the starting position one more time? |
| Preciso de uma adaptação para este movimento. | I need a modification for this movement. |
Remember: Ask which format the class uses, what the studio provides, and how to request clarification from the instructor.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask which format the class uses, what the studio provides, and how to request clarification from the instructor.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
