At a Climbing Gym in Brazil: Ask About Routes and Equipment — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Check in and ask how routes are graded
Escalada is climbing, and parede de escalada is a climbing wall. Ask how the gym labels routes and whether staff can explain the grading system before you choose one. Grading conventions can differ, so use the gym’s explanation for its own walls.
Tell the staff whether you are new to indoor climbing or have climbed elsewhere. This helps them explain check-in and supervision requirements that apply at that facility.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Como funciona a graduação das vias aqui? | How does route grading work here? |
| Sou iniciante em escalada indoor. Por onde começo? | I’m new to indoor climbing. Where should I start? |
Ask about shoes, harnesses, and rentals
Sapatilha de escalada means climbing shoe, and cadeirinha is a climbing harness. Ask which equipment is required and whether the gym rents it. Requirements depend on the activity and wall, so follow the facility’s instructions.
Before paying, confirm what the rental includes and when equipment should be returned. If you are unsure how to adjust a piece of equipment, ask staff to show you.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vocês alugam sapatilha de escalada? | Do you rent climbing shoes? |
| A cadeirinha está incluída no aluguel? | Is the harness included in the rental? |
Follow the gym’s safety briefing
Ask whether you need an orientation before using the wall and where to wait for it. Follow the gym’s current rules for equipment, belaying, and route access; a language guide cannot replace instruction from trained staff.
If you did not understand a safety point, ask the staff member to repeat or demonstrate it before climbing.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso fazer uma orientação antes de escalar? | Do I need an orientation before climbing? |
| Pode mostrar como ajustar este equipamento? | Could you show me how to adjust this equipment? |
Remember: Ask the gym to explain its route grading, rental policy, and safety orientation; follow staff instruction before using the wall.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask the gym to explain its route grading, rental policy, and safety orientation; follow staff instruction before using the wall.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
