Follow Up After a Job Interview in Brazilian Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Start with thanks and identify the conversation
Use Obrigado pela conversa de ontem (Thank you for yesterday's conversation) and mention the position so the recruiter can place your message. If you use a gendered form, obrigado is typically used by a man and obrigada by a woman.
A note with one genuine detail from the interview feels more specific than a generic message. Keep it brief and professional.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Obrigada pela conversa sobre a vaga de analista de dados. | Thank you for the conversation about the data analyst position. (speaker: woman) |
| Gostei de conhecer melhor os desafios da equipe. | I enjoyed learning more about the team's challenges. |
Ask about timing without demanding a decision
Use previsão de retorno for an expected update and próximas etapas for next steps. Could you say Você tem uma previsão de retorno? (Do you have an expected date for an update?). This asks for timing rather than pressing for an immediate decision.
Follow any timeline the recruiter gave you. If they said they would contact you next week, wait until that period has passed before sending a check-in.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você tem uma previsão de retorno sobre o processo? | Do you have an expected date for an update about the process? |
| Há alguma próxima etapa para a qual eu possa me preparar? | Is there a next step I can prepare for? |
Close with a simple professional sign-off
Finish with Fico à disposição (I'm available) or Aguardo seu retorno (I look forward to hearing from you). Include your name and use the same channel the recruiter used unless they asked you to contact them elsewhere.
A follow-up is a polite check-in, not a guarantee of a reply. Avoid repeated messages over a short period.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Fico à disposição caso precise de mais alguma informação. | I'm available if you need any more information. |
| Agradeço novamente e aguardo seu retorno. | Thank you again, and I look forward to hearing from you. |
Remember: Thank the interviewer, refer to one detail, ask about the expected timeline, and send one concise follow-up.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
Thank you for the conversation about the data analyst position. (speaker: woman)

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Thank the interviewer, refer to one detail, ask about the expected timeline, and send one concise follow-up.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
