Listen for the situation before the individual words
When a phrase is new, it is tempting to stop at every unfamiliar sound. On your first listen, try a broader question: where might this conversation be happening? A café, a shop, a street, or a first meeting? The setting helps the words become easier to remember.
The phrase guide on this site groups examples by greetings, cafés and restaurants, shopping, meeting people, travel and directions, and feelings. Use those categories as a simple map while you listen; you do not have to memorize all 50 at once.
A three-pass routine for the episode
- Listen for the main idea. Play a section without pausing. Note the situation and any phrase you recognize.
- Choose three useful phrases. Replay and write down only a few phrases you could use on a trip or in a real conversation. Check the phrase guide when you want to see its situation-based examples.
- Say them, then adapt them. Pause after each phrase, repeat it aloud, and change one detail so it fits your plans. Keep the original phrase beside your version.
Short sections are enough. If one phrase is hard to hear, listen again at normal speed and focus on the stressed words before checking a written version. The goal is to connect sound, meaning, and a situation—not to produce a perfect accent on the first try.
Start with phrases that help you take part
Here are examples from the site’s downloadable guide. They are practice prompts for this article, not a transcript of every phrase in the episode.
| Situation | Phrase to practice | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Greeting | Oi, tudo bem? | Hi, how are you? |
| Café or restaurant | O que você recomenda? | What do you recommend? |
| Shopping | Quanto custa? | How much does it cost? |
| Meeting someone | Vamos tomar um café? | Shall we have a coffee? |
| Getting around | Onde fica…? | Where is…? |
| Sharing a reaction | Que legal! | That’s great! |
Turn a phrase into a small exchange
A phrase is easier to retrieve when you know what someone might say next. Practice a short exchange, then swap the details:
- You: O que você recomenda? — What do you recommend?
- Other person: O pão de queijo está ótimo. — The cheese bread is great.
- You: Então vou experimentar. — Then I’ll try it.
This is an original practice dialogue using the guide’s café topic. Try the same structure with a drink, a dish, or a place you want to visit. For more travel scenarios, see our Brazilian Portuguese travel phrases.
Choose a few phrases you will actually use
Make a short personal list: one greeting, one question, and one phrase for your next likely situation. Say each phrase without looking, check it, then use it in a new example. Revisit the audio later and notice whether the same phrases sound easier to catch.
