Concerto vs. Conserto: Music or a Repair — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use concerto for a musical performance
Concerto with c refers to a musical performance, especially one presented for an audience, or to a composition written for soloist and orchestra. The context is music: an orchestra, a pianist, a venue, or a program.
The spelling concerto is also the Italian word used in music terminology, but in Portuguese it is a regular noun with its own accent and pronunciation.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vamos ao concerto da orquestra no sábado. | We’re going to the orchestra concert on Saturday. |
| O concerto para piano dura quarenta minutos. | The piano concerto lasts forty minutes. |
| Os ingressos para o concerto esgotaram. | Tickets for the concert sold out. |
Use conserto for fixing something
Conserto with s is related to consertar and means a repair or the act of fixing something. It can refer to a car, appliance, roof, or connection. A conserto may be completed or scheduled; context supplies the timing.
A useful memory cue is that conserto and consertar share s. If someone is repairing something, choose conserto; if people are performing music, choose concerto.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O conserto do computador ficou pronto. | The computer repair is finished. |
| Preciso marcar o conserto do ar-condicionado. | I need to schedule the air-conditioner repair. |
| O mecânico consertou a bicicleta. | The mechanic repaired the bicycle. |
Remember: Concerto belongs to music; conserto belongs to repairing or fixing something.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Concerto belongs to music; conserto belongs to repairing or fixing something.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
