De Qualquer Jeito: Say ‘Either Way’ in Brazilian Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use de qualquer jeito to say the outcome is the same
De qualquer jeito commonly means “either way,” “anyway,” or “regardless.” Use it when a choice or condition does not change what you plan to do next. The related phrase de qualquer maneira can express the same idea and may sound a little more neutral in some contexts.
At the end of a sentence, jeito can also describe how an action was done. Nesse caso, de qualquer jeito may mean carelessly or without much attention, so listen to the surrounding words.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| De qualquer jeito, precisamos confirmar o horário. | Either way, we need to confirm the time. |
| Pode escolher qualquer mesa; para mim dá na mesma de qualquer jeito. | You can choose any table; either way is fine with me. |
| Ele fez o trabalho de qualquer jeito e esqueceu uma página. | He did the work carelessly and forgot a page. |
Use context to distinguish ‘anyway’ from ‘carelessly’
When the expression introduces a conclusion, it often means “anyway” or “either way.” When it directly describes how a task was completed, it can suggest that the person did it without care. That second use may sound critical.
If you want to be precise, replace it with de qualquer maneira for the “regardless” sense or sem cuidado (without care) for the manner of doing something.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Estava chovendo, mas fomos de qualquer jeito. | It was raining, but we went anyway. |
| A porta ficou aberta porque foi fechada sem cuidado. | The door stayed open because it was closed carelessly. |
| De qualquer maneira, posso enviar o arquivo amanhã. | Either way, I can send the file tomorrow. |
Remember: Use de qualquer jeito for ‘either way’ when the result is unchanged; when it describes a task, check whether it means the task was done carelessly.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use de qualquer jeito for ‘either way’ when the result is unchanged; when it describes a task, check whether it means the task was done carelessly.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
