Meet Bruno and the teaching teamSay what you prefer not to discuss
Prefiro não comentar. — “I’d rather not comment.” This works when you do not want to discuss a subject. Prefiro não falar sobre isso. — “I’d rather not talk about that” is more explicit. You do not need to attach a long apology.
For an answer you may share later, say Ainda não quero falar sobre isso. — “I don’t want to talk about that yet.” Use “yet” only if you mean it: otherwise it can create an expectation of a future explanation. A truthful short answer is easier to maintain than an invented excuse.
Redirect, but do not erase the boundary
After declining, you can offer another topic: Mas me conta: como foi sua viagem? — “But tell me: how was your trip?” Or say Podemos mudar de assunto? — “Can we change the subject?” The new topic is optional. You do not have to keep entertaining someone who repeatedly ignores your request.
If they press, repeat the message more firmly: Eu não quero responder a essa pergunta. — “I don’t want to answer that question.” With a close friend, you may explain your preference; with a stranger, you may decide to end the exchange. Choose language that fits the situation and your comfort.
A boundary without an invented explanation
Person: Quanto você ganha? — How much do you earn?
You: Prefiro não falar sobre salário. — I’d rather not talk about salary.
Person: Nem uma ideia? — Not even an approximate amount?
You: Não quero comentar. Podemos mudar de assunto? — I don’t want to comment. Can we change the subject?
The second response does not weaken the first. Do not assume that asking about money is universal Brazilian behavior; expectations vary across individuals, relationships and workplaces. The lesson is how to choose your response, not how to label a culture.
Practice levels of directness
- You do not want to discuss a relationship. Give a polite, complete answer.
- You might discuss some news later, but not today. Make the timing clear.
- The person repeats the question after you declined. Repeat your boundary without adding private details.
Show possible replies
- Prefiro não falar sobre meu relacionamento. — I’d rather not talk about my relationship.
- Ainda não quero falar sobre isso. — I don’t want to talk about it yet.
- Eu não quero responder a essa pergunta. — I don’t want to answer that question.
Practice saying one response slowly and without nervous extra explanation. Then rehearse a change of topic. If you are practicing with a partner, agree beforehand that either person can stop the role-play. This is everyday language practice, not advice for handling every unsafe or coercive situation.

Frequently asked questions
Is prefiro não comentar rude?
It is a clear way to decline a subject. Tone and context affect how it sounds, but you are allowed to keep personal information private.
Do I need to explain why I will not answer?
No. You may explain if you want to, but a brief boundary can stand on its own.
