Exit vs. Êxito: How to Say ‘Exit’ and ‘Success’ in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Look for saída when you need an exit
The Portuguese word for an exit is saída. You will see it on signs and hear it in directions. Saída can also mean departure or a way out, depending on the sentence.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde fica a saída? | Where is the exit? |
| A saída de emergência fica à direita. | The emergency exit is on the right. |
Understand êxito as success
Êxito means success or a successful result, and it is more formal than sucesso in many everyday contexts. The expression ter êxito means to succeed, but it does not refer to leaving a place.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O projeto teve êxito depois de várias tentativas. | The project succeeded after several attempts. |
| A apresentação foi um sucesso. | The presentation was a success. |
Notice the accent and surrounding words
Saída has an acute accent on í; êxito has a circumflex on ê. Check whether the sentence is about a door or a result. That context usually makes the intended word obvious.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Siga as placas até a saída do estacionamento. | Follow the signs to the parking garage exit. |
| A campanha foi um êxito. | The campaign was a success. |
Remember: Exit is saída; êxito means success.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Exit is saída; êxito means success.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
