At an Eye Exam in Brazil: Portuguese for Glasses and Appointments — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Book an eye exam or ask about availability
Exame de vista is a common way to refer to an eye exam. Ask whether the clinic offers one and whether you need to schedule in advance. Availability, services, and booking procedures vary, so confirm them with the provider.
At an optical shop, ótica, staff can explain which services are available there and whether an appointment with an eye-care professional is needed. Use consultation when you mean a professional appointment.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vocês fazem exame de vista? Precisa marcar horário? | Do you do eye exams? Do I need to make an appointment? |
| Gostaria de marcar uma consulta com um oftalmologista. | I’d like to schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist. |
Describe what you have noticed
Say what changed and when you noticed it, using everyday language. Minha visão está embaçada means ‘my vision is blurry’; estou com dificuldade para ler de perto means ‘I’m having trouble reading up close.’ A clinician can ask follow-up questions and decide what information is relevant.
If you already wear glasses, diga uso óculos (I wear glasses) and explain what you want checked. Do not assume that an optical shop can evaluate every concern; ask the staff where to direct a medical question.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Minha visão de longe ficou embaçada nas últimas semanas. | My distance vision has become blurry over the last few weeks. |
| Uso óculos e gostaria de verificar a receita. | I wear glasses and would like to check the prescription. |
Ask about frames and next steps
Armação means eyeglass frame, and lente means lens. You can ask to try on a frame, compare options, or find out the expected delivery time. Ask the shop to confirm the price, lens details, and any fitting appointment directly.
If you need a copy of a prescription or other document, request it by name and ask who can provide it. Requirements differ by provider.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Posso experimentar esta armação? | Can I try on this frame? |
| Qual é o prazo para os óculos ficarem prontos? | How long will it take for the glasses to be ready? |
Remember: Bring the words for your appointment, what you have noticed, and the questions you want answered. Use the eye-care professional’s guidance for health decisions.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Bring the words for your appointment, what you have noticed, and the questions you want answered. Use the eye-care professional’s guidance for health decisions.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
