At a Public Service Office in Brazil: Ask About Appointments and Documents — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Confirm you are in the right place
At reception, state the service you need and ask whether that office handles it. Use atendimento for service or assistance, agendamento for a scheduled appointment, and senha for a queue number or ticket where the office uses one.
Public services differ by city, state, and agency. Check the official instructions for the specific service before travelling, then use these phrases to clarify anything that remains unclear.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Este é o local certo para solicitar esse serviço? | Is this the right place to request this service? |
| Tenho um agendamento para as dez horas. | I have an appointment at ten. |
Ask which documents and copies are needed
Ask the attendant to name the required documents and whether originals, copies, or digital files are accepted. If a document is missing, ask whether you can complete the visit another day or submit the item through an official channel.
Repeat unfamiliar document names or ask the person to write them down. Requirements depend on the agency and the service, so avoid relying on a list from a different office.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quais documentos preciso trazer? | Which documents do I need to bring? |
| Preciso apresentar o original e uma cópia? | Do I need to show the original and a copy? |
| Você pode escrever o nome desse documento? | Can you write down the name of that document? |
Understand what happens after the appointment
Before you leave, ask whether the request is complete or whether you need to return, track a protocol, or wait for a message. Ask where to check an official update and which number you should keep.
If you did not understand the timeline, use a confirmation question: então, devo acompanhar pelo site? (so, should I check through the website?). The office can tell you the correct channel and estimate for that specific request.
Remember: Confirm the service, required documents, and follow-up channel with the office handling your case. Procedures vary, so use official instructions for the specific appointment.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Confirm the service, required documents, and follow-up channel with the office handling your case. Procedures vary, so use official instructions for the specific appointment.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
