Accessible Public Transit in Brazil: Ask About Elevators and Boarding — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Find a step-free station entrance
Estação is station, entrada is entrance, and elevador is elevator. Ask which entrance has an elevator or ramp and whether it leads to the platform you need. Access features may vary between stations, entrances, and directions.
If the elevator status matters for your trip, ask whether it is operating now and check the transit operator’s current information.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual entrada da estação tem elevador? | Which station entrance has an elevator? |
| O elevador está funcionando agora? | Is the elevator working right now? |
Ask where to board
Embarque means boarding. Ask which platform or area is appropriate and whether staff can point out the boarding location. If you need a step-free route from the entrance, mention it so staff can give directions that fit your route.
Use plataforma for a transit platform and ponto de embarque for a boarding point. Repeat the line or destination to make sure the instructions refer to your trip.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde fica o ponto de embarque acessível? | Where is the accessible boarding point? |
| Como chego à plataforma sem usar escadas? | How do I get to the platform without using stairs? |
Confirm changes or ask for another route
If a lift or entrance is unavailable, ask whether there is another step-free route and where to find current notices. Follow staff directions and the transit operator’s announcements.
Route access and service status can change. Use live information from the operator for your station and travel time.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Há outra rota sem escadas até a plataforma? | Is there another step-free route to the platform? |
| Onde posso consultar avisos atualizados? | Where can I check current notices? |
Remember: Confirm the entrance, elevator status, boarding area, and any alternative route with the transit operator before continuing.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Confirm the entrance, elevator status, boarding area, and any alternative route with the transit operator before continuing.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
