At a Brazilian Bus Station: Ask About Platforms and Boarding — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Confirm the destination and departure
Rodoviária is a bus station or coach terminal. Ask Qual é a plataforma? (Which platform is it?) or Onde embarca o ônibus para…? (Where do I board the bus to…?). Add the city and departure time to make the question specific.
Passagem means ticket, horário means time or schedule, and destino means destination. Compare your ticket with the station display; if something does not match, ask staff to confirm it.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde embarca o ônibus para Belo Horizonte? | Where do I board the bus to Belo Horizonte? |
| Esta passagem é para o ônibus das oito? | Is this ticket for the eight o'clock bus? |
| Qual é o destino deste ônibus? | What is this bus's destination? |
Ask about the platform or a delay
Plataforma is platform or boarding bay. To ask whether the bus is late, say O ônibus está atrasado? If the answer includes a time you missed, ask the person to repeat it or write it down.
Routes and departures can change, so confirm current travel details with the operator or station staff. These phrases help you ask; they do not provide live schedule information.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O embarque já começou? | Has boarding started yet? |
| O ônibus está atrasado? | Is the bus delayed? |
| Pode escrever o número da plataforma? | Could you write down the platform number? |
Check the last detail before boarding
Before you board, verify the destination, platform, and departure time. A short confirmation question is easier than trying to infer a change from a loud announcement. You can also ask which door or line to use if several buses are boarding.
For local bus and metro tickets, see our separate city-transit guide. This article focuses on longer-distance buses and station communication.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Este é o ônibus certo para Campinas? | Is this the right bus to Campinas? |
| Preciso mostrar a passagem para embarcar? | Do I need to show my ticket to board? |
| A bagagem vai no bagageiro? | Does the luggage go in the baggage compartment? |
Remember: Make one question about the destination, one about the platform, and one confirmation before boarding. Practice them with a city you know.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Make one question about the destination, one about the platform, and one confirmation before boarding. Practice them with a city you know.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
