Fazer Parte de: Say You Belong to a Group in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use fazer parte de for membership or belonging
Fazer parte de means to be part of something. It works with a team, community, family, project, organization, or broader experience. Conjugate fazer for the person or thing that belongs: faço, faz, fazemos, or fazem.
After parte, the preposition de introduces the group. If the group takes a definite article, de combines with it: de + o becomes do, de + a becomes da, and de + os/as becomes dos/das.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Faço parte de um grupo de conversação. | I’m part of a conversation group. |
| Ela faz parte da equipe de atendimento. | She is part of the customer support team. |
| Essas atividades fazem parte do curso. | Those activities are part of the course. |
Choose between fazer parte and participar
Fazer parte de emphasizes membership or belonging. Participar de emphasizes taking part in an event or activity. Someone can fazer parte de um clube (belong to a club) and participar de uma reunião (attend or take part in a meeting).
English “belong” can also mean that an object is owned by someone. In that case, Portuguese often uses ser de: Este casaco é da Ana (This coat belongs to Ana). Choose the phrase by meaning, not by the English word alone.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Meu irmão participa de uma aula de dança. | My brother takes part in a dance class. |
| Você faz parte desta associação? | Are you part of this association? |
| Este caderno é do Rafael. | This notebook belongs to Rafael. |
Remember: Use fazer parte de for membership or inclusion, participar de for involvement in an activity, and ser de when you mean an item is owned by someone.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use fazer parte de for membership or inclusion, participar de for involvement in an activity, and ser de when you mean an item is owned by someone.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
