Meet Bruno and the teaching teamPut the scheduled thing before ficar and the time after para
Caldas Aulete’s ficar entry records ficar para for something postponed, deferred or scheduled. The reference was checked on October 21, 2026.
- A conversa ficou para amanhã. — “The conversation was set for tomorrow.”
- A revisão vai ficar para sexta. — “The review is going to wait until Friday.”
- Os detalhes ficaram para a próxima reunião. — “The details were left for the next meeting.”
The subject is what is assigned to the later occasion: the conversation, review or details. Ficou is singular with conversa; ficaram is plural with detalhes. In informal speech you may hear pra for para. The time still needs enough detail for the actual arrangement.
Postponed, canceled and unfinished are different updates
- A reunião ficou para sexta. — “The meeting was moved to Friday.”
- A reunião foi cancelada. — “The meeting was canceled.”
- Ainda não terminamos a pauta. — “We haven’t finished the agenda yet.”
The first supplies a later occasion. The second says the meeting was canceled, without promising a replacement. The third describes an unfinished task and does not itself reschedule anything. Avoid turning a vague unfinished update into a new appointment unless the speaker actually offers one.
If someone says fica para depois — “it can wait until later” — ask about the time when you need a firm arrangement: Depois, quando? Podemos marcar um dia? — “Later, when? Can we choose a day?”
Original dialogue: preserve the activity and confirm its new time
A: Vamos revisar o texto hoje?
Shall we review the text today?
B: Hoje não consigo. Pode ficar para amanhã?
I can’t today. Can it wait until tomorrow?
A: Pode. Às dez funciona?
Yes. Does ten work?
B: Funciona. Então fica para amanhã às dez.
It does. Then tomorrow at ten it is.
A agrees to a change and the speakers select a time. The original request alone would not prove agreement: B asks pode, and A still has to answer. In your own plans, include the date and time zone if tomorrow or ten could be unclear.
Ficar de names an earlier commitment by a person
- Eu fiquei de enviar o texto hoje. — “I said I would send the text today.”
- O envio ficou para amanhã. — “Sending it was moved to tomorrow.”
- Você ficou de confirmar o horário? — “Did you agree to confirm the time?”
Ficar de plus an infinitive emphasizes who agreed or said they would act. Ficar para plus a time places the activity in a schedule. You can use both in one update: Fiquei de enviar hoje, mas o envio ficou para amanhã — “I said I would send it today, but sending it has moved to tomorrow.” Add an explanation and check the change with anyone affected.
For the commitment pattern in more detail, read ficar de fazer. That guide serves a different question: what someone had agreed to do.
Practice: activity or person’s commitment?
- Translate os detalhes ficaram para sexta.
- Does ficou para amanhã necessarily mean canceled forever?
- Ask whether a review can wait until tomorrow.
- Recall that you had agreed to call today.
- Someone says later, but you need a date. Ask a follow-up.
Suggested answers and explanations
- “The details were left for Friday.” The plural verb agrees with detalhes.
- No. It assigns a later time in the stated context.
- A revisão pode ficar para amanhã? The question proposes a change; it does not assume acceptance.
- Fiquei de ligar hoje. Ficar de plus infinitive names the commitment.
- Podemos marcar um dia? — “Can we choose a day?” It makes an open-ended delay more concrete.
