Future Subjunctive in Portuguese: Fizer, Tiver, Puder, and Vier — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Recognize common irregular forms
The future subjunctive appears after connectors such as quando and se when the event is still open in the future. Common forms include fizer (do), tiver (have), puder (be able), and vier (come).
A useful way to recognize many irregular forms is to look at the third-person plural preterite and remove the final -am: fizeram → fizer, tiveram → tiver, puderam → puder, vieram → vier.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quando você puder, me liga. | Call me when you can. |
| Se eu tiver tempo, vou passar aí. | If I have time, I’ll stop by. |
| Quando ele vier, a gente conversa. | When he comes, we’ll talk. |
Use the same pattern with future plans and conditions
The result clause often uses the present or a form with ir + infinitive. The future meaning comes from the situation; you do not need to add a future ending to the verb after quando or se.
For regular verbs, the future subjunctive often resembles the infinitive, but these high-frequency irregular forms need to be learned on their own.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Se você fizer o pedido hoje, ele chega amanhã. | If you place the order today, it arrives tomorrow. |
| Assim que tivermos uma resposta, avisamos. | As soon as we have an answer, we’ll let you know. |
| Quando eu puder viajar, quero conhecer o Nordeste. | When I can travel, I want to visit the Northeast. |
Remember: Practice the chunks quando você puder, se eu tiver, quando ele vier, and se você fizer to recognize the future subjunctive in real speech.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Practice the chunks quando você puder, se eu tiver, quando ele vier, and se você fizer to recognize the future subjunctive in real speech.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
