Understand a Portuguese Airport Story

Meet Bruno and the teaching teamListen for the travel situation
Start with the title and episode notes as context, then let the speaker's account add the details. On your first pass, focus on the broad situation instead of trying to translate every word.
- First listen: identify the general journey and any places or travel words you recognize.
- Second listen: note when the situation changes and what the speaker does next.
- Caption check: replay a short section with the Portuguese captions and compare them with your notes.
Use the captions to check specific words, not to judge yourself for missing connected speech. The goal is to understand a little more each time.
Airport phrases for asking for help
These are original examples for a similar travel situation, not lines quoted from the episode.
| Portuguese | Meaning | Use it when... |
|---|---|---|
| Preciso de ajuda, por favor. | I need help, please. | You need assistance |
| Onde fica o portão de embarque? | Where is the boarding gate? | You are looking for your gate |
| Meu voo foi cancelado. | My flight was canceled. | You need to explain a disruption |
| A que horas começa o embarque? | What time does boarding start? | You want to confirm boarding time |
| Pode repetir mais devagar? | Could you repeat that more slowly? | You did not understand an announcement |
| Você pode me mostrar no mapa? | Can you show me on the map? | You need directions |
Notice words that signal a change
In a travel story, sequence words can help you follow events even when you miss a noun or verb:
- primeiro — first
- depois — after / then
- enquanto isso — meanwhile
- por isso — because of that / therefore
- no final — in the end
Use these as listening clues in the episode. The words here are a study aid; they are not presented as vocabulary confirmed in the audio.
Retell only what you understood
After listening, make a short retelling. Use the notes you wrote and separate what you heard from what you guessed.
- A viagem era para... — The trip was to...
- No começo, ... — At the beginning, ...
- Depois, ... — Then, ...
- Eu entendi que... — I understood that...
- Não tenho certeza, mas acho que... — I'm not sure, but I think...
The final two frames help you be accurate when a detail is unclear. It is fine to say what you understood and mark an inference as an inference.
