Tell a Short Story in Brazilian Portuguese

The I Speak Portuguese episode Telling Stories gives you a listening prompt. This guide adds an original way to organize a short story in Brazilian Portuguese: set the scene, put events in order, and say how it ended. The examples below are new practice material, not a transcript or a claim about the episode’s exact content.

Listen for the overall story first. On a second listen, notice time expressions and words that connect one event to another. You do not need to understand every sentence to follow a sequence.

Give the story a simple shape

    1. Set the scene: when or where did it happen?
    2. Start the action: what happened first?
    3. Add a detail: what happened next?
    4. Finish: how did the situation end?

Use a few concrete events instead of translating a long English story word for word.

    Connect events with useful words

    PortugueseMeaningExample
    ontemyesterdayOntem, fui ao mercado.
    primeirofirstPrimeiro, comprei frutas.
depoisafter / thenDepois, encontrei uma amiga.
aíthen / and then (informal)Aí, a gente tomou um café.
no fimin the endNo fim, voltei para casa.

These connectors help listeners follow the order of events. Aí is especially conversational; choose a connector that sounds natural for your situation.

Use past-tense verbs for completed actions

These are the forms used in the original example below:

    • ir → fui — to go → I went
    • comprar → comprei — to buy → I bought
    • encontrar → encontrei — to meet / find → I met / found
    • voltar → voltei — to return → I returned

For a completed event, these first-person forms use the pretérito perfeito. You can review more verbs in our Brazilian Portuguese verb guide.

    Put the pieces together

This is an original sample story created for practice, not a quote from the episode:

Ontem, fui ao mercado. Primeiro, comprei frutas. Depois, encontrei uma amiga. Aí, a gente tomou um café e conversou. No fim, voltei para casa.

Yesterday, I went to the market. First, I bought fruit. Then, I met a friend. After that, we had coffee and talked. In the end, I went back home.

Change the day, place, and actions to tell a true story from your own life. Start with three sentences; add details when the sequence feels comfortable.

    Practice with the episode

    1. Listen once without pausing and identify the general topic.
    2. Listen again for words that place events in time or connect them.
    3. Retell a small part in your own words, using primeiro, depois, and no fim.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I tell a simple story in Portuguese?

Give a time or place, say what happened first, add one or two events with words like ‘depois’ or ‘aí,’ and finish with the result. Short sentences are enough to make the sequence clear.

Which Portuguese tense do I use for a completed event?

The pretérito perfeito is commonly used for completed events, such as ‘fui’ (I went), ‘comprei’ (I bought), and ‘voltei’ (I returned). Choose the form that matches who did the action.

What does ‘aí’ mean in a story?

In informal Brazilian Portuguese, ‘aí’ can connect events in a sequence, similar to ‘then’ or ‘and then.’ It has other meanings too, so interpret it in context.
