Meet Bruno and the teaching teamA lower bound is not an exact total
- Mais de uma pessoa fez essa pergunta. — “More than one person asked that question.”
- Preciso de mais de um dia para terminar. — “I need more than one day to finish.”
- Tenho mais de um endereço de e-mail. — “I have more than one email address.”
The phrase sets a quantity above one. It does not tell you the exact number. A task requiring more than one day might take two days or longer; ask for the estimate you need. Use uma with a feminine noun such as pessoa and um with a masculine noun such as dia.
The usual subject pattern keeps a singular verb
TRF3’s Portuguese language guidance on mais de um explains the usual singular agreement and exceptions involving reciprocal action or a repeated expression. The reference was checked on October 21, 2026.
- Mais de um aluno pediu um exemplo. — “More than one student asked for an example.”
- Mais de uma pessoa chegou cedo. — “More than one person arrived early.”
- Mais de dois alunos pediram um exemplo. — “More than two students asked for an example.”
In the first two, the numeral um or uma goes with a singular noun and a singular verb. With mais de dois alunos, the numeral and noun are plural and pediram is plural. The phrase can contain exceptions in other structures, so learn these direct, nonreciprocal examples without turning the usual pattern into an absolute rule.
Mais de um and mais um do different jobs
- Preciso de mais de um ingresso. — “I need more than one ticket.”
- Preciso de mais um ingresso. — “I need one more ticket.”
- Preciso de mais dois ingressos. — “I need two more tickets.”
The first does not specify the total above one. The second adds one ticket to what is already available or planned. The third adds two. De is small but changes the request. If the ticket seller needs a number, give an exact total rather than relying only on a lower bound.
This is not the same as a quality comparison such as mais barato do que, “cheaper than.” For that structure, use Portuguese comparisons. Here the central issue is the quantity and whether it is a minimum or an addition.
Original dialogue: clarify the total before paying
A: Você precisa de mais de um ingresso?
Do you need more than one ticket?
B: Preciso de três no total.
I need three in total.
A: Você já tem algum?
Do you already have any?
B: Já tenho dois. Preciso comprar mais um.
I already have two. I need to buy one more.
The fictional exchange separates the final total from the extra quantity to buy. B needs three overall but only one additional ticket. Repeating “more than one” at the wrong point could leave the seller unsure whether to provide a total or an addition.
