Meet Bruno and the teaching teamHow we reviewed Memrise
Disclosure: Bruno Lopes is a co-founder of Real Life Portuguese. We checked Memrise’s official Brazilian course page on October 21, 2026. This is a documentation review, not a hands-on subscription test, an independent ranking or a measurement of teaching results. The dialogue and exercise below are our own teaching examples.
Our aim is to help you choose a practice format. A course can look relevant on paper while its pace or tasks do not suit you. Use a sample and your own learning goal to make the final decision.
Choose Portuguese (BR) for a Brazil-focused course
Memrise’s Portuguese (BR) course page describes scenario selection, native-speaker audio and videos, and an AI speaking partner. Its navigation separately lists Portuguese (BR) and Portuguese (EU). The Brazilian page names areas such as travel, food, introductions and relationships.
There is a documentation inconsistency: one FAQ paragraph on that Brazilian page refers to European Portuguese, while the title and several other sections explicitly describe Brazilian Portuguese. Check the variety selected in your account and listen to the actual course material. That stray wording is a reason to verify, not evidence that the Brazilian course does not exist.
Evaluate a scenario by the reply it prepares you to give
A topic such as “food” is broad. Narrow it to a task: asking what a dish contains, ordering a different size, or saying that the plate delivered is not yours. Then ask whether the sample helps you recognise a useful message and prepare a response.
For example, a food lesson may introduce an ingredient word. Your next task could be understanding Você quer com queijo? — “Do you want it with cheese?” — and answering Sem queijo, por favor — “Without cheese, please.” These are original examples, not a description of a particular Memrise lesson.
If you need to discuss an allergy, vocabulary recognition alone is insufficient. Get the relevant language clear and confirm understanding with the people preparing the food. This page is a study exercise, not a guarantee that an app prepares you for every practical situation.
A sample-check sheet for your own account
| Check | What to observe | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Course variety | The selected course says Brazilian Portuguese and the material matches that choice. | Every Portuguese-labelled resource uses the same variety. |
| Listening | You can connect the heard phrase to a specific meaning in context. | Recognising one clip means you understand any speaker. |
| Speaking task | You can attempt an appropriate reply and understand any feedback available. | An AI response establishes your real-world proficiency. |
| Account access | The tools and lessons you need are included under the offer shown to you. | A marketing page establishes one universal price or entitlement. |
We have not checked every plan, device or country. Treat current access, billing and feature availability as account-level questions. This review does not resolve the access arrangements for user-created community courses.
Original practice: change one part of a food scenario
Server: Você quer com queijo? — Do you want it with cheese?
You: Sem queijo, por favor. — Without cheese, please.
Server: E para beber? — And to drink?
You: Uma água, por favor. — A water, please.
- The question changes to Você quer com açúcar? — “Do you want it with sugar?” Say you want it without sugar.
- You want coffee instead of water. Change only your drink request.
- The server asks Com gelo? — “With ice?” You do want ice. Give a clear short answer.
Suggested answers and explanations
- Sem açúcar, por favor. Keep the request pattern and change the ingredient.
- Um café, por favor. The article changes with the noun: um café.
- Com gelo, sim. Repeating the requested option makes the answer explicit.
After checking, hide the answers and make a new order. The aim is to handle a changed detail rather than repeat a dialogue from memory. For longer exchanges, continue to ordering food in Brazil.
A sensible role for Memrise in your routine
If you like choosing practical situations and working with short spoken material, the documented format is worth exploring. If you prefer an explicit course sequence across several skills, compare the Busuu course review. Neither description tells us which tool produces better results for you.
For everyday Brazilian expression practice, compare Real Life Portuguese as well. Choose a small routine you can actually use: listen with a purpose, attempt a reply, then notice what still needs an explanation or feedback from a person. Our general app guide helps you compare those learning jobs.
Build a listening-and-response routine
For related teaching practice, explore our guide to speaking, grammar, subtitles and accent. These exercises apply the idea of listening and then creating your own message. They are original written activities, not additional episode recordings.
Try Real Life Portuguese if you want Brazilian native audio with everyday expressions. Use one relevant phrase as a starting point, then answer a changed question in your own words. Explore the actual lessons before deciding whether a second app adds a useful job to your routine.
Frequently asked questions
Does Memrise have Brazilian Portuguese?
Yes. Its official website lists a Portuguese (BR) course separately from Portuguese (EU). Check the variety selected in your own account.
Does this review prove Memrise’s AI feedback is accurate?
No. The course page advertises an AI speaking partner, but we did not test or measure the quality of its feedback.
Are the food examples copied from Memrise?
No. They are original written teaching examples for checking whether you can respond when a scenario changes.
