Não adianta usually means that something will not help or achieve the intended result. It does not automatically mean that you cannot do it. Learn to identify the missing benefit and suggest a better next step.

The question is whether an action helps

In Bruno and Sabrina’s quality-of-life discussion, financial comfort is considered alongside having time to enjoy life. That contrast provides a useful setting for não adianta: an action may be possible, yet fail to deliver what matters to the speaker. The explanations and dialogues here are original practice, not quotations from the hosts.

Caldas Aulete includes a sense of adiantar meaning to have an effect or bring an advantage. In the negative pattern, não adianta can correspond to it does not help, there is no point, or it is no use. Choose the English wording that fits the situation; do not translate it as one fixed phrase in every sentence.

Ask what result the speaker wants. In Não adianta sair agora; a loja já fechou, leaving is physically possible, but it will not help you shop at that closed store. The sentence says nothing about whether leaving might be useful for a different purpose.

Não adianta ligar agora; o atendimento já terminou.
There is no point calling now; customer service has already closed.

Isso não adianta se ninguém entender a mensagem.
That does not help if nobody understands the message.

Build não adianta plus an infinitive

For a reusable beginner pattern, keep não adianta together and follow it with the action: não adianta esperar, não adianta correr, não adianta decorar. You do not need a preposition between adianta and that infinitive. In this pattern, adianta stays singular: Não adianta estudar sem prestar atenção.

The reason or limitation often comes afterward. It can be introduced by porque, se or sem, or simply be a new sentence. A clear reason makes the comment more useful and less abrupt. Não adianta, said on its own, may sound dismissive if the other person does not know what you mean.

Não adianta decorar a frase sem entender a situação.
There is no point memorizing the phrase without understanding the situation.

Não adianta esperar aqui porque a entrada é do outro lado.
There is no point waiting here because the entrance is on the other side.

    Adianta mandar uma mensagem antes?
Would sending a message beforehand help?

Compare it with não consigo and não vale a pena

These messages can overlap in a situation, but they do not ask the listener to understand the same problem. If you cannot open a document, you may need technical help. If opening it will not help, you may need the correct version. If the effort is not worthwhile, you may choose a different plan.

    PatternMain ideaExample
Não consigo + actionI cannot manage to do itNão consigo abrir o arquivo. — I cannot open the file.
Não adianta + actionIt does not achieve a useful resultNão adianta abrir esse arquivo; é a versão antiga. — There is no point opening that file; it is the old version.
Não vale a pena + actionThe result is not worth the cost or effortNão vale a pena atravessar a cidade só para isso. — It is not worth crossing the city just for that.

    Reply with a useful alternative

The dialogue below is a fictional planning exchange. Both people focus on the next useful action. A less blunt opening such as Acho que não adianta — I do not think it will help — can frame the comment as your assessment.

A: Vou ligar para a loja agora.
I am going to call the store now.

B: Acho que não adianta ligar hoje. Ela já fechou.
I do not think calling today will help. It has already closed.

A: Então vou mandar uma mensagem e esperar a resposta amanhã.
Then I will send a message and wait for the reply tomorrow.

B: Boa ideia. Assim você deixa a pergunta registrada.
Good idea. That way, you leave a record of the question.

    Keep the scheduling meaning separate

Adiantar a reunião means to bring the meeting forward; adiantar o trabalho can mean to get ahead with the work. Those are different uses of the same verb. Não adianta esperar does not say that someone moved the waiting to an earlier time.

Practise one contrast aloud: Consegui adiantar a reunião — I managed to bring the meeting forward — versus Não adianta marcar a reunião sem confirmar o horário — There is no point scheduling the meeting without confirming the time. The action and context tell you which sense is active.

Try it before opening the answers

These are original practice activities. Say your answer aloud or write it first, then compare the meaning and explanation. Other clear replies can also work; this is not a proficiency score.

    1. You are able to send a file, but it is the wrong version. Which pattern explains why sending it will not help?
      Suggested answer and explanation

Não adianta enviar esse arquivo; é a versão errada — There is no point sending this file; it is the wrong version. The issue is usefulness, not ability.

    2. Complete: Não adianta ___ sem entender. Use decorar.
      Suggested answer and explanation

Não adianta decorar sem entender — There is no point memorizing without understanding. Use the infinitive directly after adianta.

    3. Someone says Não consigo abrir a porta. Does that necessarily mean opening it would be pointless?
      Suggested answer and explanation

No. Não consigo describes an inability to manage the action. It does not evaluate the action’s usefulness.

    4. Make this less abrupt: Não adianta. Add a reason and an alternative.
      Suggested answer and explanation

One option: Acho que não adianta esperar aqui; a fila começa lá. Vamos para a entrada — I do not think waiting here will help; the line starts over there. Let’s go to the entrance.

    5. Does Adiantei a consulta describe a pointless appointment?
      Suggested answer and explanation

No. In this setting it means I brought the appointment forward. The scheduling meaning is different.
