Order a Pastel at a Brazilian Street Market: Fillings and Sauces — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Choose a filling at the pastel stand
A pastel is a crisp, fried pastry sold at many Brazilian street markets. Common fillings include queijo (cheese), carne (beef), and palmito (heart of palm), though stalls vary. Ask which flavors are available today.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quais sabores de pastel vocês têm? | What pastel fillings do you have? |
| Um pastel de queijo, por favor. | One cheese pastel, please. |
Ask whether it contains an ingredient
Use leva…? to ask whether a food contains something: leva cebola? means “does it have onion?” If an allergy is involved, name it clearly and ask the seller to check; do not rely on a guess about the filling.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O pastel de palmito leva queijo? | Does the heart-of-palm pastel contain cheese? |
| Você pode confirmar se esse recheio tem amendoim? Tenho alergia. | Can you confirm whether this filling has peanuts? I have an allergy. |
Ask for sauce and a drink
Molho is sauce; pimenta is pepper or hot sauce. Ask whether the sauce is spicy before adding it. Feiras often have nearby drink stalls, so you can place a separate order for fresh juice or water.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esse molho é apimentado? | Is this sauce spicy? |
| Tem caldo de cana? Um copo pequeno, por favor. | Do you have sugarcane juice? A small cup, please. |
Remember: Ask for the flavor first, check ingredients when needed, and find out whether the sauce is spicy.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask for the flavor first, check ingredients when needed, and find out whether the sauce is spicy.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
