Ouvir vs. Escutar: How to Say “Hear” and “Listen” in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Use ouvir for hearing sounds and receiving information
Ouvir often means to hear or listen to something. It describes sounds you perceive and can also appear with music, a person, or news: ouvi um barulho (I heard a noise), ouvi música (I listened to music), and ouvi a notícia (I heard the news). The exact English choice depends on whether the focus is the sound or the activity.
The verb ouvir is irregular in the present: eu ouço, você ouve, a gente ouve, vocês ouvem. Learn the form ouço with a short phrase because it is common when talking about what you hear or listen to.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Ouvi alguém bater na porta. | I heard someone knock on the door. |
| Eu ouço podcasts no ônibus. | I listen to podcasts on the bus. |
| Você ouviu o que ela disse? | Did you hear what she said? |
Use escutar to highlight attention or active listening
Escutar often emphasizes paying attention to a sound or speaker. You can say escute com atenção (listen carefully) or estou escutando (I’m listening). It can also mean listen to music. In many everyday contexts, ouvir and escutar overlap, so treat the distinction as a useful tendency rather than a strict rule.
In a conversation, Escuta! can introduce a point or ask someone to listen, while Você está me ouvindo? checks whether the person can hear you. These choices are common but depend on tone and context. A request can sound warm or abrupt, so soften it with por favor when needed.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Escute esta parte da música. | Listen to this part of the song. |
| Estou escutando, pode continuar. | I’m listening; go ahead. |
| Você está me ouvindo bem? | Can you hear me clearly? |
Choose based on what you want to emphasize
If a sound reached you without effort, ouvir is a useful choice: Ouvi um cachorro (I heard a dog). If you want someone to pay attention, escutar makes that intention clear: Escuta o professor. For listening to music or a podcast, either verb may work, with regional and personal preferences influencing the choice.
Instead of memorizing a hard boundary, notice the speaker’s intention. Are they reporting a sound, checking audio, or asking for attention? That question helps you understand the sentence even when both verbs appear in similar settings.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Não ouvi o alarme porque estava dormindo. | I didn’t hear the alarm because I was sleeping. |
| Escuta o áudio antes de responder. | Listen to the audio before replying. |
| Você ouviu o podcast que eu recomendei? | Did you listen to the podcast I recommended? |
Practice with sounds, music, and conversations
Describe three recent experiences: a sound you heard unexpectedly, something you listened to on purpose, and a person you paid attention to. Choose ouvir or escutar, then say why you chose it. You will see that context carries much of the meaning.

| Escutei a mensagem de voz duas vezes. | I listened to the voice message twice. |
| Ouvi a explicação e agora entendi. | I heard the explanation, and now I understand. |
Remember: Use ouvir for hearing or receiving a sound and escutar when you want to highlight attention. The verbs overlap, so let the situation guide your choice.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use ouvir for hearing or receiving a sound and escutar when you want to highlight attention. The verbs overlap, so let the situation guide your choice.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
