At a Bookstore in Brazil: Ask for a Book Recommendation — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Name the genre or subject you like
Gênero is genre and assunto is subject. Use gosto de ler (I like reading) followed by a topic or genre, such as romance, história, or ficção científica. A specific interest gives the bookseller a useful place to start.
If you are looking for a book to practice Portuguese, mention your current level and whether you prefer short chapters or familiar subjects.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Gosto de ler romances históricos. Você recomenda algum? | I like reading historical novels. Do you recommend any? |
| Estou procurando um livro curto sobre a história do Brasil. | I'm looking for a short book about the history of Brazil. |
Ask about editions and reading difficulty
Edição means edition and linguagem acessível means accessible language. Ask whether a title is available in paperback, large print, or an edition with notes. Availability depends on the shop and publisher.
For a book in Portuguese, you can ask whether the writing is suitable for a beginner. A staff member may suggest a shorter text or a topic you already know.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Existe uma edição de bolso deste livro? | Is there a pocket edition of this book? |
| A linguagem é acessível para quem está aprendendo português? | Is the language accessible for someone learning Portuguese? |
Find a title when you only remember part of it
Explain the subject, cover, author, or one phrase you remember. Use não lembro o título (I don't remember the title) and describe what you do know. A partial clue can help staff search the catalog.
Before you leave, confirm the author and edition if several books have similar names.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Não lembro o título, mas o livro era sobre uma viagem pela Amazônia. | I don't remember the title, but the book was about a trip through the Amazon. |
| Você pode conferir se esta edição está em português? | Could you check whether this edition is in Portuguese? |
Remember: Name a genre or subject, describe your reading preference, and confirm the edition before buying.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Name a genre or subject, describe your reading preference, and confirm the edition before buying.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
