Portuguese at a Ceramics Class: Clay, Tools, and Techniques — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Learn the names of basic ceramics tools
Argila means clay; torno de cerâmica is a pottery wheel; and forno de cerâmica is a ceramics kiln. A piece of pottery can be called uma peça de cerâmica. Learn each noun with its article as you gather the supplies for class.
A ferramenta is a tool, and a esponja is a sponge. Ask the teacher to name an unfamiliar item and show how to hold it safely.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esta argila está pronta para usar? | Is this clay ready to use? |
| Como se chama esta ferramenta? | What is this tool called? |
Ask how to shape or finish a piece
Modelar means to shape or mold; alisar means to smooth; and secar means to dry. To ask for a demonstration, use Você pode me mostrar como…? followed by an infinitive.
Glazing and firing involve steps that depend on the studio and material. Ask the instructor which finish is appropriate and how long the piece needs before it can be handled.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode me mostrar como centralizar a argila? | Can you show me how to center the clay? |
| Quanto tempo a peça precisa secar? | How long does the piece need to dry? |
| Quando ela vai para o forno? | When will it go into the kiln? |
Describe what you want to make
Name the object and add one feature: uma tigela pequena (a small bowl), um vaso alto (a tall vase), or uma caneca com alça (a mug with a handle). This gives the teacher a clear starting point for discussing shape and technique.
If you are still deciding, ask which project is realistic for your experience level and the time available in the class.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quero fazer uma tigela pequena para iniciantes. | I want to make a small bowl for beginners. |
| Qual forma é mais fácil para começar? | Which shape is easiest to start with? |
Remember: Use a short tool or technique question, then describe the piece you hope to make so the instructor can guide your next step.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Use a short tool or technique question, then describe the piece you hope to make so the instructor can guide your next step.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
