At a Brazilian Restaurant With a Baby: High Chair and Mealtime Phrases — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

Ask about a high chair and table space

Cadeira alta is a high chair; some people also say cadeirão. Ask whether the restaurant has one before you sit down. If you need room for a stroller, explain that at the entrance and follow the staff's directions.

Seating and supplies vary by location. Confirm availability with the staff rather than expecting every restaurant to have the same equipment.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask about a high chair and table space
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Vocês têm uma cadeira alta para bebê?Do you have a high chair for a baby?
Tem espaço para deixar o carrinho? Is there space to leave the stroller?
Podemos sentar em uma mesa com mais espaço?Can we sit at a table with more space?

Ask about a small portion or a cup of water

A small portion is uma porção pequena. Ask whether the kitchen can serve a smaller amount or put part of a dish separately. The restaurant may have limits on custom requests, so phrase the question as a request.

Ask what is in a dish if you need to understand its ingredients. Do not rely on a general translation when an ingredient could matter for a child's health.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask about a small portion or a cup of water
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
É possível pedir uma porção menor? Is it possible to order a smaller portion?
Você pode trazer um copo de água, por favor?Could you bring a glass of water, please?
O que vem neste prato? What comes with this dish?

Keep the order simple and confirm it

Use para a criança to say that something is for the child. Repeat the drink and dish when the server confirms the order, especially if you asked for a smaller serving or a separate plate.

If you need to warm food or prepare a bottle, ask whether the staff can help and follow their instructions. Availability may depend on the kitchen.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Keep the order simple and confirm it
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Este suco é para a criança.This juice is for the child.
Só para confirmar: o arroz vem separado?Just to confirm: does the rice come separately?

Remember: Ask whether the restaurant has the equipment and seating you need, then make a specific request about a portion, drink, or dish.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Ask whether the restaurant has the equipment and seating you need, then make a specific request about a portion, drink, or dish.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
