At a Tourist Information Center in Brazil: Ask What to See — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask for a map and a recommendation
Posto de informações turísticas means tourist information center. Ask what a staff member recommends based on the time you have or what you enjoy.
Use a specific interest, such as history, parks, or architecture, to get an answer that is more helpful than a generic list.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Tem um mapa da região? | Do you have a map of the area? |
| O que você recomenda para uma visita de duas horas? | What do you recommend for a two-hour visit? |
| Gosto de arquitetura e lugares tranquilos. | I like architecture and quiet places. |
Ask about distance and travel time
Ask how far a place is and how long it takes to get there. The answer may depend on current transport and traffic, so confirm a live route when timing matters.
For language to ask someone on the street for directions, use our separate directions guide.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| É longe daqui? | Is it far from here? |
| Quanto tempo leva para chegar a pé? | How long does it take to get there on foot? |
| Qual é o melhor jeito de chegar lá? | What’s the best way to get there? |
Confirm opening information
Ask whether an attraction is open today and where to check current hours or tickets. Opening schedules can change, so verify the latest information with the venue.
A short follow-up can help you distinguish a recommendation from a confirmed detail.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esse museu está aberto hoje? | Is that museum open today? |
| Onde posso confirmar o horário? | Where can I confirm the hours? |
| Precisa comprar ingresso antes? | Do I need to buy a ticket in advance? |
Remember: Explain your interests and time limit, ask for one recommendation, and confirm current details before setting out.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Explain your interests and time limit, ask for one recommendation, and confirm current details before setting out.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
