Portuguese at a Brazilian Wedding: Congratulations, Toasts, and Small Talk — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Congratulate the couple naturally
Parabéns pelo casamento means congratulations on the wedding. Felicidades can express good wishes, and Desejo muitas felicidades a vocês means I wish you both lots of happiness. Choose a phrase that reflects what you want to say rather than relying on a speech you memorized.
If you know one person better than the other, greet both when possible. Names make a short message feel personal and give you an easy way to begin a conversation.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Parabéns pelo casamento! | Congratulations on your wedding! |
| Desejo muitas felicidades a vocês. | I wish you both lots of happiness. |
| Foi muito bonito acompanhar esse momento. | It was lovely to be here for this moment. |
Use easy questions for wedding small talk
You can ask how the couple knows a guest, compliment a detail you sincerely noticed, or ask whether someone is enjoying the celebration. Keep questions light and let people choose how much they want to share.
A festa means the party or celebration; a cerimônia is the ceremony; and um brinde is a toast. The setting makes these words easy to remember because you can connect them to what is happening around you.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Como você conhece os noivos? | How do you know the couple? |
| Você está gostando da festa? | Are you enjoying the celebration? |
| A decoração ficou linda. | The decorations look beautiful. |
Join a toast or excuse yourself politely
Saúde is a common word when people toast, and Um brinde aos noivos means A toast to the couple. You can raise a glass and repeat the short phrase if it feels comfortable. If you need to leave a conversation, say Com licença, vou cumprimentar a família (Excuse me, I'm going to greet the family).
Wedding customs differ across families and events. These examples give you language for a social gathering without assuming every celebration follows the same schedule or traditions.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Um brinde aos noivos! | A toast to the couple! |
| Saúde! | Cheers! |
| Com licença, vou pegar uma bebida. | Excuse me, I'm going to get a drink. |
Remember: Practice one congratulations phrase, one question for another guest, and one short toast. Use names and details that fit the event you attend.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Practice one congratulations phrase, one question for another guest, and one short toast. Use names and details that fit the event you attend.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
