    Join with a simple introduction

Say oi or olá, give your name, and ask the other person’s name. If you are arriving with someone, introduce them too.

Use prazer (nice to meet you) as a short, friendly response. A relaxed introduction gives the conversation somewhere to begin.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Join with a simple introduction
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Oi, eu sou a Alex. Qual é o seu nome?Hi, I’m Alex. What’s your name?
Prazer em conhecer você.Nice to meet you.
Como você conhece a anfitriã?How do you know the host?

Ask about the event or shared context

A question about the host, neighborhood, music, or food gives the other person a topic they already know. Ask one question at a time and listen for a detail you can follow up on.

Avoid turning small talk into a list of questions. Share a short answer about yourself too, so the conversation feels balanced.

    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Você mora por aqui?Do you live around here?
Você já conhecia esta música?Did you know this song already?
O que você achou da comida? What did you think of the food?

Move on or leave the conversation politely

If you want to introduce someone else or get a drink, close warmly before moving away. If you would like to talk again, say that you are glad to have met the person.

For questions designed specifically to keep a Portuguese conversation going, read our separate follow-up-question guide.

Remember: Prepare one introduction, one question about the event, and one polite way to move to another conversation.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Prepare one introduction, one question about the event, and one polite way to move to another conversation.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
