At an Artisan Market in Brazil: Ask About Handmade Goods — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

Ask what an item is made from

Ask de que material é feito? (what material is it made from?) or quem fez esta peça? (who made this item?). The phrases show interest while letting the seller explain the product.

Craft traditions and materials vary. Avoid assuming the origin of an object based only on its appearance.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask what an item is made from
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
De que material é feita esta bolsa? What material is this bag made from?
Quem fez esta peça?Who made this item?
Você tem outra cor?Do you have another color?

    Check size and price

Ask whether an item comes in another size and how much it costs. If you want to compare two objects, point to them and say qual é a diferença? (what is the difference?).

Use a polite tone and allow the seller to explain whether an item can be customized.

    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Tem um tamanho menor?Do you have a smaller size?
Quanto custa esta peça?How much does this item cost?
Você faz sob encomenda?Do you make items to order?

    Confirm payment and packaging

Before buying, ask which payment methods the seller accepts and whether the item can be wrapped for travel. Confirm any order details before making a custom request.

For farmers’ market phrases about produce, see our separate guide to buying fruit and vegetables in Portuguese.

Remember: Choose one item and practice asking about its material, price, and a payment method before you buy.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Choose one item and practice asking about its material, price, and a payment method before you buy.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
