Portuguese for Choir Rehearsal: Voice Parts and Practice — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Find out how the choir is organized
Choir is coral, rehearsal is ensaio, and voice part is naipe. Common voice labels include soprano, contralto, tenor, and baixo. Ask which part is appropriate for your range or whether the director needs to hear you sing first.
Group names and placement methods differ. Let the director explain the current process and whether you can attend a rehearsal before joining.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual é o horário do ensaio? | What time is rehearsal? |
| Como descubro em qual naipe devo cantar? | How do I find out which voice part I should sing? |
Ask about lyrics and musical markings
Letra means lyrics, partitura means sheet music, and marcação is a notation or marking. Ask whether the group shares recordings or annotated sheet music for practice.
If you are unfamiliar with a musical direction, point to the marking and ask what it means in this piece. A short explanation can help you rejoin the rehearsal.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vocês podem compartilhar a partitura? | Can you share the sheet music? |
| O que significa esta marcação? | What does this marking mean? |
| Qual trecho devo praticar primeiro? | Which passage should I practice first? |
Coordinate attendance and preparation
Ask what to bring and how the group handles a missed rehearsal. If you will be absent, avisar means to let someone know: Vou avisar que não poderei ir (I'll let them know that I can't go).
Ask which section needs extra attention before the next meeting, then write down the rehearsal date and any preparation request.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso levar uma pasta para guardar as partituras? | Do I need to bring a folder to keep the sheet music? |
| Na próxima semana, vamos ensaiar o refrão? | Next week, are we rehearsing the chorus? |
Remember: Learn the choir's voice-part terms, ask for the music and practice guidance, and confirm the next rehearsal.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Learn the choir's voice-part terms, ask for the music and practice guidance, and confirm the next rehearsal.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
