Portuguese for a Picnic: Invite Friends and Share Food — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

    Invite someone to join

A casual invitation can begin with quer fazer um piquenique? (would you like to have a picnic?). Add a day, time, or park to make the plan easy to answer.

If the person is interested but unavailable, offer another date. For more on setting a specific social plan, see our guide to turning vamos marcar into an actual plan.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Invite someone to join
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Quer fazer um piquenique no domingo?Would you like to have a picnic on Sunday?
Vamos nos encontrar no parque às onze?Shall we meet at the park at eleven?
Se chover, a gente combina outro dia.If it rains, we’ll arrange another day.

    Ask what to bring

Use levar to talk about bringing something to the picnic. Ask what the other person can bring, then say what you will take so you do not arrive with several identical items.

The word lanche can refer to a snack or light meal. Name the food directly if you want to be specific.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask what to bring
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
O que você pode levar? What can you bring?
Eu levo frutas e água.I’ll bring fruit and water.
Você prefere doce ou salgado?Do you prefer sweet or savory?

Share food and check what works

When offering food, use quer experimentar? (would you like to try it?) or fica à vontade (make yourself at home / help yourself). Ask directly about allergies or restrictions rather than assuming a dish is suitable.

Our guide to explaining food allergies in Portuguese has more precise phrases for dietary needs and ingredients.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Share food and check what works
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Quer experimentar este bolo?Would you like to try this cake?
Você tem alguma restrição alimentar?Do you have any dietary restrictions?
Pode me dizer se tem algum ingrediente que você evita? Can you tell me if there is an ingredient you avoid?

Remember: Invite a friend with a day and place, agree on one item each person will bring, and ask about dietary needs before preparing food.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Invite a friend with a day and place, agree on one item each person will bring, and ask about dietary needs before preparing food.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
