Portuguese at a Community Garden: Tools, Plants, and Shared Tasks — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask where to start and what needs attention
Horta comunitária means community garden, and canteiro is a planted bed. Ask Onde posso ajudar? (Where can I help?) or O que precisa ser feito hoje? (What needs to be done today?).
The group's current priorities may depend on weather, the plants, and the garden schedule. Follow the organizer's instructions before starting a task.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual canteiro precisa de água? | Which garden bed needs water? |
| O que vamos plantar hoje? | What are we planting today? |
Learn common garden tools and actions
Pá is shovel, regador is watering can, luva is glove, and semente is seed. Planting is plantar, watering is regar, and pulling weeds is tirar as ervas daninhas.
Ask before borrowing a tool and return it where the organizer expects. A shared garden may label storage areas or have routines for cleaning equipment.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Posso pegar este regador? | Can I take this watering can? |
| Onde guardamos as luvas? | Where do we keep the gloves? |
Coordinate a task with another volunteer
Use enquanto to describe two actions happening at the same time: Você rega enquanto eu preparo a terra? (Can you water while I prepare the soil?). Use depois to agree on what happens next.
If you are not sure how much water or soil to use, ask the person responsible for that garden bed. Different plants need different care.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Eu posso preparar as etiquetas depois de plantar? | Can I prepare the labels after planting? |
| A gente se encontra aqui na semana que vem? | Shall we meet here next week? |
Remember: Ask what needs doing, learn the tool names, and check with the garden organizer before changing how a shared bed is cared for.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask what needs doing, learn the tool names, and check with the garden organizer before changing how a shared bed is cared for.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
