Volunteer in Brazil: Portuguese for Joining a Community Project — Practice

A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.

    October 20, 2026 4 min practice

Find out what the project needs

Ask how a person can participate: como faço para participar? (how can I take part?) or vocês estão precisando de voluntários? (are you looking for volunteers?). A community project may have a specific schedule, task, or sign-up process, so ask the organizer what applies.

Explain why the activity interests you in one simple sentence. You do not need to make claims about your experience; say what you can offer and ask whether it fits the project.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Find out what the project needs
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Gostaria de ajudar no projeto aos sábados.I would like to help with the project on Saturdays.
Vocês precisam de ajuda com organização ou comunicação?Do you need help with organizing or communication?

State your availability and useful experience

Use tenho disponibilidade às… (I am available on…) to give a realistic schedule. If you have relevant experience, mention it briefly; if you are learning, you can say tenho interesse em aprender (I am interested in learning).

Ask whether the task requires any preparation, orientation, or materials. Do not assume every volunteer role uses the same process; the person organizing the project can explain the expectations.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: State your availability and useful experience
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Tenho disponibilidade duas tardes por mês.I am available two afternoons a month.
Preciso participar de uma orientação antes?Do I need to attend an orientation first?

Confirm the task before you arrive

Before the activity, confirm the address, start time, person to look for, and what you should bring. If the project changes its schedule, ask how the organizer will contact volunteers.

A clear question such as qual vai ser a minha tarefa? (what will my task be?) helps both you and the group make a useful plan.

Remember: Ask how to join, describe your availability, and confirm the task and preparation with the project organizer.

    Check your understanding

Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Ask how to join, describe your availability, and confirm the task and preparation with the project organizer.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
