Ask to Join a University Course Waitlist in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Explain which class you want to take
Turma is a class section or cohort, and disciplina is a course subject. Give the course name, code, and time so the office can check the correct section.
Say the system shows no available places rather than assuming the course is cancelled or closed permanently.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quero me matricular nesta turma de introdução à sociologia. | I want to enroll in this section of Introduction to Sociology. |
| O sistema informa que não há vagas nesta disciplina. | The system says there are no places available in this course. |
Ask about a waitlist and alternatives
Lista de espera means waitlist. Ask whether the department keeps one and how the order is determined. If no list exists, ask about another section or a later term.
Enrollment rules and deadlines depend on the institution. Follow the official academic calendar and instructions you receive.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Existe uma lista de espera para esta turma? | Is there a waitlist for this class section? |
| Há outra turma com horário compatível? | Is there another section with a compatible schedule? |
Confirm how an opening will be communicated
Ask how you will know if a place becomes available and whether you need to take action within a time limit. Confirm the email or portal where notices appear.
A waitlist is not the same as confirmed enrollment. Check your official schedule after any change.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Como serei avisado se surgir uma vaga? | How will I be notified if a place opens? (speaker: man) |
| Preciso confirmar a vaga dentro de algum prazo? | Do I need to accept the place within a certain time? |
Remember: Name the exact course section, ask how the waitlist works, and verify enrollment in the official system.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.
I want to enroll in this section of Introduction to Sociology.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Name the exact course section, ask how the waitlist works, and verify enrollment in the official system.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
