Course Registration in Brazil: University Portuguese for Enrollment Questions — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask whether enrollment is open
Matrícula is enrollment or registration, and disciplina can mean an academic course. Ask the registrar or your program whether registration is open and which requirements apply. Academic calendars differ by institution.
Use ainda há vagas? to ask whether places are available. If the system shows an error, describe the course and the message rather than guessing the reason.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Ainda posso fazer matrícula nesta disciplina? | Can I still enroll in this course? |
| Ainda há vagas para a turma da manhã? | Are there still places in the morning section? |
Check prerequisites and schedule conflicts
Ask whether a pré-requisito (prerequisite) applies and how to confirm that you completed it. If two class times overlap, say os horários coincidem and ask which options the institution permits. Follow official instructions when they differ from informal advice.
Exchange students should ask their international office about home-university approval or credit transfer before making a final choice. Procedures depend on the program.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esta disciplina tem algum pré-requisito? | Does this course have a prerequisite? |
| As aulas coincidem. Com quem posso confirmar as opções? | The classes overlap. Who can I check the options with? |
Confirm the result and keep a record
After submitting a request, check whether its status is requested, pending, or confirmed. Ask which office can explain an unclear status and when you should check again. Keep the confirmation or protocol number if the institution provides one.
This vocabulary helps you ask questions; it cannot determine eligibility or deadlines. Use the official calendar and current instructions for decisions.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Minha matrícula já foi confirmada? | Has my enrollment been confirmed yet? |
| Onde posso consultar o calendário acadêmico? | Where can I check the academic calendar? |
Remember: Ask your program office about availability, prerequisites, dates, and the status of your enrollment request.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask your program office about availability, prerequisites, dates, and the status of your enrollment request.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
