At a Parent-Teacher Meeting in Brazil: Portuguese Questions for Families — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Start by explaining what you want to understand
You can say gostaria de conversar sobre o desempenho do meu filho/minha filha (I would like to talk about my child's progress) or queria entender melhor a rotina da turma (I wanted to understand the class routine better). If your child uses a preferred name or pronouns, use the language that fits your family.
Ask the teacher to explain unfamiliar school terms in another way. A parent meeting is a two-way exchange: you can share what helps your child at home as well as ask about school.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Como está sendo a adaptação dele na turma? | How is he adjusting to the class? |
| O que ajuda minha filha a participar das atividades? | What helps my daughter take part in the activities? |
Ask about routine, learning, and support
Choose one topic at a time: participation, homework, a subject that feels difficult, or a routine change. Specific questions make it easier to leave with an action you can follow up on.
If the teacher describes a challenge, ask for a concrete example and what the family can do next. Avoid comparing your child with classmates; focus on their needs and the support available.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Em quais atividades ela participa com mais facilidade? | Which activities does she take part in most easily? |
| Como podemos apoiar essa habilidade em casa? | How can we support that skill at home? |
| A escola oferece algum apoio para essa dificuldade? | Does the school offer support for this difficulty? |
Confirm the next step and how to stay in touch
Before the meeting ends, summarize what you understood and ask whether you need to send anything, practise something at home, or schedule another conversation. School procedures and support services differ, so let the teacher or school explain the options for your child.
A confirmation question can be simple: então, vamos observar isso nas próximas semanas e conversar de novo? (so, we'll watch this over the next few weeks and talk again?). Ask which channel the school wants families to use for follow-up.
Remember: Ask about one concrete part of school life, share what you notice at home, and confirm a practical next step with the teacher.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask about one concrete part of school life, share what you notice at home, and confirm a practical next step with the teacher.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
