Ask to Pay in Installments in Brazilian Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask whether the store offers installments
Parcela is an installment, and parcelar means to pay in installments. Ask Em quantas vezes posso parcelar? (In how many installments can I pay?). The number of installments and payment methods depend on the store and transaction.
Cartão can mean card. Confirm whether the option applies to your card and do not assume every store accepts the same payment methods.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Posso parcelar esta compra no cartão? | Can I pay for this purchase in installments by card? |
| Em quantas parcelas vocês dividem o valor? | Into how many installments do you split the amount? |
Check whether interest changes the total
Sem juros means without interest; com juros means with interest. Ask if the quoted installment amount is the final monthly amount and request the total before paying. A small monthly number may still lead to a different overall cost.
Read the payment screen or receipt before confirming. If the math is unclear, ask the clerk to show the total and each installment.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esse parcelamento é sem juros? | Is this installment plan interest-free? |
| Qual será o valor total com as parcelas? | What will the total amount be with the installments? |
Repeat the amount before you confirm
Say Só para confirmar… (Just to confirm…) and repeat the number of payments, the amount of each one, and the total. This gives the clerk a chance to correct a misunderstanding before the transaction is approved.
If you decide not to continue, you can say Vou pensar e volto depois (I'll think about it and come back later).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Só para confirmar: são cinco parcelas de duzentos reais? | Just to confirm: it is five installments of two hundred reais? |
| Você pode me mostrar o valor total antes de finalizar? | Could you show me the total before completing the purchase? |
Remember: Ask how many installments are available, confirm interest and total cost, and check the amount before approving the payment.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask how many installments are available, confirm interest and total cost, and check the amount before approving the payment.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
