Rent a Bike in Brazil: Portuguese for Rates, Helmets, and Return Times — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Ask about rates and rental periods
Alugar means to rent. Ask how much it costs per hour or per day and whether the rental has a minimum period. If the bike is shared through an app, ask what steps you need to unlock it.
Clarify when the rental period starts and what happens if you return the bike late. Terms and pricing vary between providers, so confirm them before you leave.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quanto custa alugar uma bicicleta por hora? | How much does it cost to rent a bicycle per hour? |
| Tem um período mínimo de aluguel? | Is there a minimum rental period? |
| Como funciona o pagamento pelo aplicativo? | How does payment through the app work? |
Check the bike and available equipment
Ask whether a capacete (helmet) is available and how to adjust it. Before riding, check that the brakes and tires appear to work, and tell staff about a problem before you take the bike.
If you are unfamiliar with the area, ask which routes are intended for bicycles. Follow local signs and rules, and use a route that matches your comfort level.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O aluguel inclui capacete? | Does the rental include a helmet? |
| Você pode conferir o freio desta bicicleta? | Could you check this bicycle’s brake? |
| Tem uma ciclovia perto da praia? | Is there a bike path near the beach? |
Confirm where and when to return the bicycle
Ask whether you must return the bike to the same location or can leave it at another approved station. What seems like a nearby rack may not be a valid return point for a particular service.
Confirm the return time and any instructions before unlocking the bicycle. Se eu devolver aqui, está tudo certo? means “If I return it here, is that all right?”
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso devolver a bicicleta neste mesmo lugar? | Do I need to return the bicycle to this same place? |
| Até que horas posso ficar com a bicicleta? | Until what time can I keep the bicycle? |
| Este é um ponto autorizado para devolução? | Is this an approved return point? |
Remember: Before riding, confirm the cost, equipment, route, and return point. Ask the provider about its rental terms and follow posted cycling rules.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Before riding, confirm the cost, equipment, route, and return point. Ask the provider about its rental terms and follow posted cycling rules.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
