Ask about the exchange rate and service fee

Câmbio means currency exchange or the exchange rate, depending on context. Before agreeing to a transaction, ask what rate applies, whether there is a service fee, and what total you will receive. Rates and fees change, so confirm them directly at the time of the exchange.

Valor means amount or value, taxa means fee or rate, and comprovante means receipt or proof of payment. Ask the staff member to show the final calculation if you want to check it carefully.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Ask about the exchange rate and service fee
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Qual é a cotação de hoje? What is today’s exchange rate?
Tem alguma taxa de serviço?Is there a service fee?
Quanto vou receber em reais? How much will I receive in reais?

Confirm the amount before completing the exchange

Repeat the amount and currency before handing over cash or confirming a card transaction. Ask whether the quoted amount already includes fees. If you do not understand the calculation, request a slower explanation instead of guessing.

Some travelers use cards or bank services instead of exchanging cash at a counter. Compare the terms offered and choose what works for your situation; this guide teaches the language, not financial advice.

    Check your understanding

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Ask for the current cotação, any taxa, and the final amount in reais. Confirm the calculation and request a comprovante before completing the exchange.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
