Taking a Stroller on Public Transit in Brazil: Portuguese Questions — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Find the elevator and accessible route
Carrinho de bebê is stroller, elevador is elevator, and escada is stairs. Ask whether an elevator is working and which exit has the easiest route for a stroller.
Equipment and station access can change. Ask transit staff about the current route and check posted service notices.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Onde fica o elevador? | Where is the elevator? |
| Esta saída tem escada ou rampa? | Does this exit have stairs or a ramp? |
| O elevador está funcionando hoje? | Is the elevator working today? |
Ask where to board with a stroller
Ask which door or section provides more room for the stroller. If you need help boarding, use Pode me ajudar a entrar? and explain what you need.
Follow instructions from the transit staff and keep the stroller secured as required on that service. The exact procedure can differ by transport system.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Qual porta costuma ter mais espaço? | Which door usually has more space? |
| Você pode me avisar quando chegarmos à estação? | Could you let me know when we reach the station? |
Confirm your stop and transfer
Use Onde devo descer? to ask where you should get off. A transfer is baldeação or conexão, depending on the system. Repeat the station name and ask how long the walk is between platforms if you need to change lines.
One short question at a time makes a directions answer easier to follow in a noisy station.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Preciso fazer baldeação nesta estação? | Do I need to transfer at this station? |
| Quanto tempo leva para chegar à outra plataforma? | How long does it take to get to the other platform? |
Remember: Ask transit staff about the working elevator, boarding space, and stop. Confirm the current route before setting off with a stroller.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask transit staff about the working elevator, boarding space, and stop. Confirm the current route before setting off with a stroller.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
