What Does Saúde Mean? “Cheers,” “Bless You,” and “Health” in Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
One word, three common situations
Saúde means “health” in Portuguese. As an exclamation, “Saúde!” can mean “Cheers!” when you raise a glass or “Bless you!” after someone sneezes. The situation tells you which English translation fits.
Keep the accent in saúde. It marks stress on ú; say the a and ú as separate vowel sounds. A rough cue is sa-OO-dee in many Brazilian accents, but the final consonant and vowel vary by speaker.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Saúde! | Cheers! / Bless you! |
| Como está sua saúde? | How is your health? |
| Estou cuidando da minha saúde. | I’m taking care of my health. |
Raise a glass: Saúde!
At a toast, saúde is a wish for good health. You can simply repeat “Saúde!” or say “À nossa saúde!” (To our health). Look at the action—people raising glasses—rather than searching for a different definition of the word.
The phrase works with a nonalcoholic drink too. You do not need to explain what you are drinking in order to join the good wishes.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A: Vamos brindar? Saúde! | A: Shall we make a toast? Cheers! |
| B: Saúde! A um ótimo encontro! | B: Cheers! Here’s to a great get-together! |
After a sneeze: Saúde!
If someone sneezes, a common response is “Saúde!”. The person who sneezed may answer obrigado or obrigada. Unlike a toast, you would not normally respond by raising a glass or repeating an entire dedication.
This is an everyday social response, not a statement about a person’s medical condition. When unsure, a simple saúde and a friendly tone are enough.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A: Atchim! | A: Achoo! |
| B: Saúde! | B: Bless you! |
| A: Obrigada. | A: Thank you. |
Talk about health as a noun
In “Minha saúde está boa”, saúde is the topic of the sentence. Related everyday expressions include plano de saúde (health insurance plan) and posto de saúde (a public primary-care health facility). These phrases do not mean “a plan for a toast” or “a sneeze station”.
For learning, practice the complete phrase and its meaning. If you need health care, a professional can explain the relevant service; this lesson teaches language rather than medical advice.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você tem plano de saúde? | Do you have health insurance? |
| Onde fica o posto de saúde? | Where is the local health clinic? |
| Desejo muita saúde para você. | I wish you good health. |
Choose the situation before translating
Read each sentence aloud and picture what is happening. If someone is lifting a glass, translate the exclamation as cheers. After a sneeze, use bless you. In a sentence about well-being, keep the noun health.
For a speaking challenge, use saúde three times: once at a toast, once after a pretend sneeze, and once in a sentence about taking care of yourself. Then explain the difference in English.
Remember: Ask a partner to name a situation. Respond with Saúde!, Obrigado/Obrigada, or a complete sentence about health. Explain why your answer fits.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Choose the language for the situation
Now use the explanation to decide what fits the situation. Check the reason for the answer, not just the option you chose.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Ask a partner to name a situation. Respond with Saúde!, Obrigado/Obrigada, or a complete sentence about health. Explain why your answer fits.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
