    Say saúde after someone sneezes

Saúde means ‘health.’ In Brazil, it is a common, polite response when someone sneezes, similar to ‘bless you’ in English. The same word is used regardless of who sneezes; you do not change it for gender or number.

The person who sneezed may reply with obrigado or obrigada, depending on the speaker. People vary in whether they say it, so do not treat silence as a sign of rudeness.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Say saúde after someone sneezes
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
    — Atchim! — Saúde! — Obrigada.— Achoo! — Bless you! — Thank you.
Ele espirrou e todo mundo disse: ‘Saúde!’He sneezed and everyone said, ‘Bless you!’
Saúde! Espero que você melhore logo.Bless you! I hope you feel better soon.

Use saúde as ‘cheers’ when glasses are raised

At a celebration, saúde is also the everyday Portuguese toast ‘cheers.’ People may raise a glass and say saúde before taking a sip. The literal wish for health makes the two social uses easy to connect, even though English translates them differently.

A toast is optional and context-driven. Follow the group’s cue and use the word simply; a casual drink does not require a long speech.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Saúde literally means ‘health.’ Use it after a sneeze as a courtesy and when raising a glass as ‘cheers’; the social situation supplies the meaning.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
