Set a Cleaning Schedule with Roommates in Brazilian Portuguese — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
List the shared tasks
A chore vocabulary list tells you how to say lavar (wash), varrer (sweep), and arrumar (tidy), but roommates also need to agree on which tasks are shared. Name the room and the task so no one has to guess what limpar a cozinha means in practice.
Ask which chores people consider daily, weekly, or occasional. Standards and schedules differ between homes, so talk about the level of cleaning each person expects.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Quem fica responsável por lavar a louça hoje? | Who is responsible for washing the dishes today? |
| Com que frequência vamos limpar o banheiro? | How often are we going to clean the bathroom? |
Make a rota people can follow
A escala is a rota or schedule. Try rotating tasks weekly or assigning the same task to someone who prefers it, then revisit the arrangement if the workload feels uneven. Use ficar responsável por to say who takes a task.
A useful schedule names the task and the day. Keep it somewhere every roommate can see, such as a shared note or household chat.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Eu fico responsável pelo banheiro nesta semana. | I will be responsible for the bathroom this week. |
| Podemos revezar a limpeza do fogão? | Could we take turns cleaning the stove? |
Adjust a missed turn without keeping score
If a roommate misses a chore, ask whether they can still do it or want to swap. A reminder can be direct without being harsh. Focus on what the home needs next rather than listing every past mistake.
If the schedule repeatedly fails, change the system together. A rota should make shared work easier, not create a new source of conflict.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você consegue lavar a louça hoje ou prefere trocar comigo? | Can you wash the dishes today or would you rather swap with me? |
| Vamos ajustar a escala para funcionar melhor? | Shall we adjust the rota so it works better? |
Remember: Name the tasks, agree on a visible schedule, and adjust turns by mutual agreement when plans change.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Name the tasks, agree on a visible schedule, and adjust turns by mutual agreement when plans change.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
