Meet Bruno and the teaching teamSeparate spare time from a shortage
The quality-of-life episode raises a familiar question: how much room does work leave for the rest of your day? This guide uses that topic for original language practice. It does not assume everybody has the same working hours or control over their schedule.
Sobrar describes what remains or is available after other needs have been met. Sobra tempo para uma caminhada means there is time to spare for a walk. Faltar can describe something missing or insufficient: Falta tempo para descansar means there is not enough time to rest. A person may instead simply say Não tenho tempo — I do not have time.
The dictionary meanings matter, but the surrounding sentence matters too. Faltam dez minutos para a reunião is not automatically a complaint that you lack ten minutes. It usually counts the ten minutes still remaining before the meeting.
Depois do almoço, sobra tempo para um café.
After lunch, there is time to spare for a coffee.
Hoje falta tempo para terminar tudo.
Today there is not enough time to finish everything.
Faltam dez minutos para a aula começar.
There are ten minutes left before the lesson starts.
The amount of time controls the verb
In these standard patterns, tempo is singular: sobra tempo, falta tempo. A plural amount takes the plural form: sobram duas horas, faltam dez minutos. The amount can come after the verb, so do not assume the first word must be the subject.
Adding para mim identifies who has the spare time or experiences the shortage. It does not change a plural amount into a singular subject. Sobram duas horas para mim still has sobram. Start with the simpler sentence, then add the person or purpose.
| Singular | Plural | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Sobra uma hora. — There is one hour to spare. | Sobram duas horas. — There are two hours to spare. | One hour becomes two hours. |
| Falta um minuto. — One minute remains. | Faltam cinco minutos. — Five minutes remain. | The count changes; it does not necessarily express a shortage. |
| Sobrou tempo. — There was time left. | Sobraram vinte minutos. — There were twenty minutes left. | The past verb still agrees with the time amount. |
Compare an available slot with a countdown
Suppose your next meeting begins in twenty minutes. Faltam vinte minutos para a reunião tells your listener the countdown. It does not prove all twenty minutes are available for another task: you may still need to walk there or prepare. Sobram vinte minutos para revisar describes usable time left for a purpose.
Ask a practical follow-up instead of guessing. Dá tempo de revisar antes da reunião? means Is there time to review before the meeting? In a busy exchange, repeating both the amount and the activity helps avoid agreeing to something you cannot fit in.
A: Faltam vinte minutos para a aula. Dá tempo de tomar um café?
There are twenty minutes before class. Is there time to have a coffee?
B: Precisamos de dez minutos para chegar lá.
We need ten minutes to get there.
A: Então sobram dez minutos. Prefiro pegar um café para levar.
Then there are ten minutes to spare. I would rather get a coffee to go.
B: Pode ser. Assim a gente não se atrasa.
That works. That way, we will not be late.
Talk about yesterday, not only a typical day
Use sobrou or sobraram for a completed situation: Ontem sobraram quinze minutos — Yesterday there were fifteen minutes left. Use sobrava or faltava for a background or repeated situation: Antes, faltava tempo para almoçar com calma — Before, there was not enough time to have lunch without rushing.
These forms describe the language of the situation, not a rule that spare time is always easy to create. You can explain a constraint without defending or judging it: Não sobrou tempo hoje. Podemos conversar amanhã? — There was no time left today. Can we talk tomorrow?
Ontem sobrou meia hora, então liguei para uma amiga.
Yesterday I had half an hour to spare, so I called a friend.
Naquela época, faltava tempo para os meus hobbies.
At that time, I did not have enough time for my hobbies.
Use the other guides for other meanings
This lesson is about time amounts and verb agreement. O resto and o restante name what is left; sentir falta de expresses missing someone or something. Faltar à aula means to be absent from class. Those neighboring patterns are useful, but substituting one into a time sentence may change the message entirely.
