At a Surf Lesson in Brazil: Ask About Boards, Waves, and Class Times — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Find a lesson and describe your level
Aula de surfe is a surf lesson. Tell the instructor whether you are a beginner or have surfed before, then ask which class fits your experience. Levels and class formats vary by school, so let the instructor explain what each one includes.
Ask where the group meets and how long the lesson lasts. Beach meeting points can be hard to spot, so confirm a landmark or name of the kiosk.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Vocês têm aula de surfe para iniciantes? | Do you have surf lessons for beginners? |
| Onde é o ponto de encontro da aula? | Where is the meeting point for the lesson? |
Ask about the board and other equipment
Prancha is surfboard and alugar means to rent. Ask whether the board is included, what size the instructor recommends, and whether you should bring anything else. Do not assume one board or setup works for every learner.
Confirm the price and what it covers before booking. The surf school can explain current equipment, schedule, and cancellation details.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A prancha está incluída no valor da aula? | Is the board included in the lesson price? |
| Preciso levar alguma coisa além da toalha? | Do I need to bring anything besides a towel? |
Check current conditions and follow the instructor
Ask whether the class is running and where the instructor wants you to wait. Sea conditions can change, so rely on the local instructor’s current guidance and follow all safety instructions during the lesson.
If an instruction is unclear, ask the instructor to repeat it before entering the water. Useful phrases are pode repetir? (could you repeat that?) and pode demonstrar? (could you show me?).
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| A aula vai acontecer com as condições de hoje? | Will the lesson go ahead in today’s conditions? |
| Pode demonstrar esse movimento mais uma vez? | Could you demonstrate that movement one more time? |
Remember: Confirm the lesson level, meeting point, equipment, and current conditions with the surf school; follow the instructor’s safety directions.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Confirm the lesson level, meeting point, equipment, and current conditions with the surf school; follow the instructor’s safety directions.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
