At a Yoga Class in Brazil: Ask About Levels, Mats, and Instructions — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Choose a class that fits your experience
Aula de yoga is a yoga class, and iniciante means beginner. Ask what the class includes and whether the instructor recommends prior experience. Studios may use different names for levels or styles, so confirm what a specific class will be like.
Check the day, start time, and arrival instructions. If the studio asks you to arrive early, confirm how early and where to wait.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Esta aula é adequada para iniciantes? | Is this class suitable for beginners? |
| Preciso chegar com alguns minutos de antecedência? | Should I arrive a few minutes early? |
Ask about the mat and other items
Tapete is mat. Ask whether the studio provides one or expects you to bring your own. Some studios have additional requirements, so ask the instructor or reception rather than relying on another location’s rules.
If you are unsure what clothing is suitable, ask what people usually wear for that class. Keep the question practical and follow the studio’s guidance.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| O estúdio empresta tapete ou preciso levar o meu? | Does the studio lend mats, or should I bring my own? |
| Há algum material que eu precise trazer? | Is there any equipment I need to bring? |
Ask the instructor to repeat a direction
A movement instruction can include a body part, direction, and breath cue. If you miss one detail, ask for a demonstration or a slower explanation. You can also say that you are following a modified option the instructor has given you.
Tell the instructor if you need clarification or want to pause. This vocabulary helps you communicate; it does not replace professional advice about physical limitations.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Você pode demonstrar a postura? | Could you demonstrate the pose? |
| Pode repetir a instrução mais devagar? | Could you repeat the instruction more slowly? |
Remember: Confirm the class level, mat policy, and arrival details, then ask the instructor to repeat or demonstrate any direction you did not understand.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Confirm the class level, mat policy, and arrival details, then ask the instructor to repeat or demonstrate any direction you did not understand.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
