    Recognize where and when questions

Onde? asks where; quando? asks when; and que horas? asks at what time. A dispatcher may use these words to establish a location and a timeline.

Listen for the question word first, then answer with one piece of information. If you did not understand, ask for the question to be repeated.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Recognize where and when questions
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Onde aconteceu? — Na Rua A, perto da praça.Where did it happen? — On Rua A, near the square.
Quando começou? — Há cerca de dez minutos. When did it start? — About ten minutes ago.

Understand questions about people and events

Quantas pessoas? asks how many people; o que aconteceu? asks what happened; and há alguém ferido? asks whether anyone is injured. Answer only what you know and distinguish an observation from a guess.

Common answers can begin with uma pessoa, duas pessoas, não sei, or não consigo ver. You do not need a complicated sentence to provide useful information.

Brazilian Portuguese examples with English translations: Understand questions about people and events
    Brazilian PortugueseEnglish meaning
Quantas pessoas estão envolvidas? — Duas pessoas. How many people are involved? — Two people.
O que aconteceu? — Um carro bateu no portão.What happened? — A car hit the gate.

Ask for repetition or simpler wording

If you miss a question, ask Pode repetir, por favor? If you need a slower pace, say Pode falar mais devagar? Tell the listener that you do not speak much Portuguese, so they can adjust their wording.

Stay focused on one exchange at a time. A short answer can be repeated or clarified more easily than a long explanation.

Recall the Portuguese, then say it

Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you

Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.

Listen for onde, quando, quantos/quantas, and o que aconteceu; answer with facts you know and request clarification when needed.

Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
