Portuguese for University Group Chats in Brazil: Clear, Polite Messages — Practice
A guided practice lesson with English explanations, Brazilian Portuguese examples, and answers you can check. Read the examples, recall the meaning, then say a version of your own.
Make your question easy to answer
Group chats can move quickly. Name the course or topic, then ask one focused question. If the information may already have been shared, mention that you are checking rather than implying nobody posted it.
Use alguém sabe…? (does anyone know…?) for an informal group question, or você poderia confirmar…? (could you confirm…?) when writing to one person.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Alguém sabe se a aula de amanhã será na sala habitual? | Does anyone know whether tomorrow's class will be in the usual room? |
| Você poderia confirmar o horário da apresentação? | Could you confirm the presentation time? |
Share an update with useful details
When you post a file or schedule change, say what it is and what people should do with it. “Enviei a nova versão do resumo” (I sent the new version of the summary) is clearer if you also say what changed or where the file is.
Ask permission before sharing another student's personal information, private message, or photo. Group membership does not automatically mean everyone agreed to wider sharing.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Atualizei o documento com as referências. Podem revisar até quinta? | I updated the document with the references. Can you review it by Thursday? |
| O link da reunião mudou; este é o novo endereço. | The meeting link changed; this is the new address. |
Keep the tone friendly and confirm agreements
Short replies such as combinado (agreed), perfeito (great), and obrigada pela ajuda (thanks for the help) make coordination smoother. If there is confusion, restate the date, task, or decision calmly.
Casual spelling and emoji are common in some groups, but an official course channel may expect a different tone. Follow the group's purpose and the instructor's directions.
| Brazilian Portuguese | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Combinado: cada pessoa envia sua parte até quarta-feira. | Agreed: each person sends their section by Wednesday. |
| Só para confirmar, a reunião começa às duas? | Just to confirm, does the meeting start at two? |
Remember: Name the course or task, ask a specific question, and repeat dates or decisions so everyone can act on the same information.
Check your understanding
Choose the English meaning of each Portuguese example. Answer before looking back at the tables. These questions check the written examples in this guide; they are not a listening or proficiency test.
Recall the Portuguese, then say it
Read the English prompt and say a Portuguese version before opening the answer. The answer shows the example from the lesson; other natural translations may also work. Compare the meaning and the situation rather than counting a different word as automatically wrong.

Make the phrase useful to you
Choose one example you could actually use. Say it once from memory, then change one detail that fits your life, such as the person, place, time, or object. Check whether your change also needs a different verb form, article, or adjective ending. If it does, compare it with the pattern in the explanation.
Name the course or task, ask a specific question, and repeat dates or decisions so everyone can act on the same information.
Return to two prompts tomorrow without opening the answers first. If a phrase still feels difficult, shorten it to a useful chunk and build the complete sentence again.
